Canine Delivery/Whelping Puppies are typically born in a wooden or plastic box with enough room for the female dog to lay comfortably. It should have high enough sides that the puppies cannot jump out once they begin exploring but low enough that Momma can still jump in and out. We have prepared a 'nest' for Prudence using a box within a Wire Crate. This will keep the puppies in the box and still give Prudence room to leave them and rest if she wishes. We have used a large enough crate for the puppies to continue using even as they grow since moving or taking away the 'nest' or safe haven can be socially detrimental to the puppies. Prudence has already begun spending time in her new 'nest' to ensure she accepts it and feels comfortable enough in it to whelp/delivery her babies when the time comes. About twelve hours before delivery, a dog's body temperature often decreases by about two degrees. In Prudence's 8th week of pregnany, we began taking her temperature each morning and evening. Other signs we will be on the look-out for will include rejection of food, nauseousness, and frequently licking of her vulva. Dogs often reject all food approximately 12 hours before delivery because they are feeling nauseous. Once her water has broken, she will begin cleaning her vulva repeatedly as it discharges the whitish/transparent liquid. She will soon begin to pant as the contractions begin. Puppies can be born with intervals as short as a few minutes or as long as two hours. Puppies are normally born covered with a strong membrane. Ideally, Prudence will lick it away cleaning the puppies face and cut the umbilical cord with her teeth. Mother dogs often eat the placenta for extra nutrients. As soon as the puppy is clean, s/he should be put to the Mother's nipple even if another puppy is being born at the same time. By suckling, the puppy will promote more contractions and will help its littermates be born. We expect that Prudence is due the second week of May and will post video and photos of her delivery as soon as it happens! Stay posted! UPDATE 5/9/08: We welcomed six beautiful puppies into the world!
